SETAREH X is pleased to announce their first solo show by Philipp Goldbach. Thematically referencing the phenomenon of art‘s reproducibility, the exhibition Musée Imaginaire combines recent works that reveal states of dissolution of photography and its medial transformations up to the digital present.

In a conceptual approach, the artist presents pictorial and sculptural „materializations“ as well as “figures of thought” of analogue photography, which formally refer to minimalist image concepts and digital structures. Obsolete in the technical sense, relics of the photographic become open to allegorical meanings. They constitute the basis for Goldbach‘s artistic work, which is about recontextualization and media critique, but also an examination of art history.

Goldbach‘s works particularly reflect the relationship between time, written language and the technical image. His appropriations and recodings of sources of visual art, and their theory, aim at a history of ideas of storage media, at the materiality of information and at the physical processes of its inscription.

Centrepiece of the exhibition is the 3 x 6 m wall piece Lossless Compression, (RUB, Kunst- geschichte), which consists of the entire slide library of the ‚Department of Art History’ of the ‚Ruhr University Bochum‘ (RUB), comprising approximately 120,000 35mm slides. In addition to large-format colour photograms of light sculptures by the Dusseldorf artist Ferdinand Kriwet, Kriwet 1-4, also created at the RUB, the exhibition is completed by a hand written MicrographoftheprogrammatictextLeMuséeImaginairebyAndréMalraux,aswellasaFujifilmlight object from the Stacks / Progressions series of works.

Among others, he received the Vordemberge-Gildewart Scholarship (2009) and the Ars Viva Prize (2011-2012). Goldbach lectured Film and Photographic Studies at the ‚Leiden University Centre for the Arts in Society‘ at Leiden University (2017-2019). He is also a member of the artist group darktaxa-project. His works are part of the collections of DZ Bank, Museum Folkwang, Hessisches Landesmuseum Wiesbaden, Mudam Luxembourg and Centre Pompidou, Paris.
