skulls, trees, clouds

SETAREH X is pleased to present the solo show skulls, trees, clouds by Berlin based artist Janes Haid-Schmallenberg.

Time and its relation to objects can be observed and understood through many layers, nuances and angles. The new series of paintings by Janes Haid-Schmallenberg navigates through different temporalities. Several realities coexist simultaneously, displaying their own narratives on the canvas. Skulls, trees and clouds are presented in parallel situations, existing both within the specific momentum they are depicted in and as a whole.

Skulls represent the metamorphosis of that what was and how its function has changed. What used to be part of a living being becomes an inert empty vessel. Trees put the focus on perspectives. Perspectives of size, age and decision of choice. Clouds emphasize the ephemeral estate of time, whose constant morphing shapes are immortalized and preserved in a specific moment.

Haid-Schmallenberg’s works emanate a desire of vitality, delivered in time intervals that dissolve on the quest for a certain meaning. The paintings aren’t about finding a specific significance or reaching a lucid epiphany. They are an invitation, an open field that makes questions emerge but that doesn’t provide an answer. The artist focuses on the process, the different ways of reading, interpreting or feeling. The magic of integrating the self to the picture, flowing through the timelines, adjusting to the rhythm that the elements require.

His paintings offer the viewer choices, opportunities to observe how the decision-making process varies from one individual to another since there is no “right” or “wrong” way to tackle the pleasure of traveling through colours and shapes. »My opinion is a horse« enables a reflection on preferences. Can they be traced back? It presents a journey on how attention is driven to and through a painting.

The materialization of how the selection methods are different to all. The prioritization of colours when observing varies depending on the taste of the viewer as does the focus placed across a hole or another when looking at the main tree. The experiential encounter will differ in the moving path around the composition, having every eye its own arriving time to each point. »My opinion is a horse« is a one-of-a-kind experience, unique to every viewer.

The figures depicted in the paintings across the room are not always completely in tune with their presence. They exist despite time, and at the same time, they are completely drawn by it. The title »Koloss« refers to the monumental head figure which is observed by the beings surrounding it. The colossal figure echoes perspectives in different levels of understanding and appreciation. On the one hand, same anatomical forms have different sizes. On the other hand, the resemblances fluctuate between the known, the unknown and the place they have in the mind of the viewer.

Janes Haid-Schmallenberg also facilitates an observation further from the natural means. In »Fast clouds«, the main figure’s expression is depicted viewed from several angles at once, it presents movement within a steady figure.

The antithesis of calming compositions that strike the inwardness with the clash of colour, form and concept, seeking to have an impact on what the viewer feels. Haid-Schmallenberg’s works play with the personal baggage every individual carries, and that deepens when observing the paintings towards a scrutinized understanding of one’s own decisions, directions and a visualization of choices.
